Overview of Cutting Wheels: Gearbox and Spherical Hob

For optimal performance, a spherical hob needs to generate adequate downforce, with each hob requiring a minimum of 5 tons. Considering a wheel with a thickness of 1200mm, it has a total of 54 hobs. Typically, about one-third of these—around 18 hobs—are actively engaged in rock breaking, necessitating a total pressure of at least 90 tons. Each gearbox must therefore support 45 tons of pressure, highlighting the need for robust radial load-bearing capabilities.

The hob functions as a rolling rock-breaker, which means it doesn't demand high torque. For safety considerations, the gearbox is designed with a torque rating of 150 kNm. The output end features a tapered hexagonal design, which facilitates quick installation and removal of the cutting wheel.

The spherical hob utilizes two primary types of fixed cutting tools: side hydromills and main cutting hydromills. Each trajectory line includes three side hydromills and two main cutting hydromills. Additionally, the design incorporates a flapper tooth in a roller structure, which is both simple and effective.
